Patient-centric benefits and challenges of regional Anaesthesia in complex surgeries

Author : Aejaz Ahmad and Dr. CK Senthil Kumar

Abstract

Regional anaesthesia has become an essential component of modern surgical care, primarily due to its ability to offer targeted pain relief while maintaining physiological stability. This approach aligns seamlessly with patient-centred care principles by promoting faster recovery, minimising opioid dependency, and reducing systemic side effects. However, the widespread implementation of regional anaesthesia faces significant challenges, including skill-intensive procedures, resource disparities, and patient-specific factors such as anxiety and cultural resistance. This paper delves into the multidimensional benefits of regional anaesthesia, including its role in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, its impact on patient satisfaction, and its contribution to reducing the opioid burden. Simultaneously, it examines barriers such as training demands, accessibility issues, and patient apprehensions. Through an exhaustive review of 15 contemporary studies and a comprehensive analysis of clinical data, the research offers critical insights into the practical applications of regional anaesthesia in complex surgeries. The study highlights actionable recommendations for overcoming adoption challenges and emphasises the necessity of integrating education, technology, and policy reforms to maximise the potential of regional anaesthesia in advancing patient-centred surgical care.
