Bi(NO3)3·5H2O is found to be an efficient catalyst for benzylation of secondary benzylic alcohols with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds under solvent-free conditions at 80 ºC. The present protocol exhibits an excellent substrates scope for various secondary benzylic alcohols with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. Eco-friendly, efficient, mild reaction conditions and a wide range of applicability to various substrates with high yield are the major advantages of the present protocol.
