Designing Pause: Interior Strategies for Modular Highway Rest Stops in India

Author : Sanjana Jain, AR Meenakshi Sinha and Dr. Nischay N Gowda

Abstract

India’s highways handle over 65% of freight and 80% of passenger movement, yet well-designed rest points remain scarce. Minutes of Break proposes a 4,000 sq. ft retractable rest hub, built into petrol pump sites under the Humsafar Policy. Designed to be compact yet functional, the hub includes short-stay dorms, private pods, accessible washrooms, a cafe, EV charging, and optional play or dining zones.

Inspired by the retractable mechanism of a flash stick, the structure folds in and out efficiently, allowing quick deployment without compromising comfort. The project promotes driver wellness, reduces fatigue-related accidents, and supports sustainable travel. This paper explores site conditions, user needs, material logic, environmental strategies, and a scalable model for implementation.
